How to become a caregiver

If the person you’re caring for would like to give you permission to communicate with us about their health care, they’ll need to complete the Authorization to Disclose Protected Health Information form, which is valid for two years. (If you’ve already submitted power of attorney or guardianship documents to us, this form isn’t needed.)

If you’re a Regence member, you can easily sign and submit the form online. Just sign in to your account and go to Documents.

Caregiver support: Answers to your questions

Caring for someone can be overwhelming, and it can be hard to know what to do—especially when it comes to health care. Here’s some information that might help with commonly asked questions.

How to make sure they’re on the right health insurance plan

To make sure your loved one or person you’re caring for has the right level of coverage to meet their health care needs, you’ll want to consider a few things:

They may want to stick with their plan if

They may need a new plan if

Their costs (premium, deductibles, copays) are still within their budget

They need to spend less on their costs (premium, deductibles, copays)

They don’t take any prescription drugs, or they use the same ones as last year and those drugs are still on the plan’s formulary

Their current plan won’t cover their prescription drugs next year

The amount of coverage meets their needs

They need more coverage

Taking care of yourself

Caregiver duties can be stressful. But one of the most important things you can do as a caregiver is maintain your own health and well-being. Make time for self-care and seek respite care when you need a break. And if you’re struggling with mental health, there are lots of ways to ask for help.

One option is the free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). You can reach SAMHSA’s helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
